The Missile Is On The Launch Pad

Basically, I am an optimistic person...cup half full, the good guy always wins, etc. However, for today, let's take a stroll down the path of pessimistic possibilities with the current events in North Korea and their missile.

Assoc Press: SEOUL, South Korea - Japanese, South Korean and U.S. missile-destroying ships set sail to monitor North Korea's imminent rocket launch, as Pyongyang stoked tensions Monday by detaining a South Korean worker for allegedly denouncing the North's political system.

Late Monday, the North also threatened to take an unspecified "resolute countermeasure" against South Korea if it joins a U.S.-led international campaign aimed at stopping the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
'Declaration of war'
South Korea has only been an observer to the Proliferation Security Initiative, but Seoul officials recently said they were considering fully joining the program after the North's rocket launch.
Seoul's participation would be treated as "a declaration of a war," Pyongyang's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea said in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.


Now, of course, the bigger picture of world peace and human lives are at the forefront of any of my concerns in regards to this pending situation. But allow me to be self centered for a paragraph or two.

Wouldn't it just fit into our adoption story??!!! A country, who has managed to stay war free since the 50's in spite of never truly declaring peace with North Korea, would find themselves in this situation. And it just so happens that "this situation" is hitting its peak when we are getting so close to a referral. Anyway.... here South Korea sits needing and/or being forced to make choices which could inevitably provoke war. War and adoptions don't really go together. (Post war adoptions seem to be popular in order to deal with the biracial babies resulting from GI's reproducing with natives, but this is another discussion all together.) But, I think it's safe to say that adoptions would be fatally impacted by a war in South Korea. A country who has been safe from war for nearly 50 years....I apply to adopt from it and .....war. Unbelievable.....am I ever going to be able to sit back and relax about adoption? It doesn't look like it. But boy if this all comes to pass uneventfully as prior tense spots with North and South Korea's relationship, this child will never have to wonder if we really wanted her. Our persistence and optimism and belief that the good guys win have gotten us this far.
