We will soon make changes to our home study. We had originally had an age range of 6-18months old. This limits us in availability and puts us behind many people who are looking to adopt as young as possible. While it was a concern to us in the beginning the attachment issues that come with an older child, our main concern now is the fact that we may not be able to adopt at all from a foreign country. The developmental delays are estimated to be for every four months in an orphanage results in one month lost of development. We could work through this challenge. The added benefits of an older child would be that she would be closer in age to the boys having a closer relationship and experiences with them. It would be easier for Steve to have her on his own if she can walk and assist herself with simple tasks. We might be able to miss the diaper stage...a bonus after having three in diapers at the same time.
The change in age will also open us up to another orphanage with our agency in Vietnam which houses only older children. It will place us amongst a few families which are willing to adopt an older child. I don't know of any families who do want an older child from the forum; however, there are those quiet families whose requests are unknown. My case manager is finding out the specifics in how to change our home study which will now reflect our age of 6mo to 4 years. I should hear tomorrow regarding this. I have heard from my case manager that a new program is being introduced to our agency today....as our plan B. She is keeping us in mind to see if we would qualify for this and we'll hopefully have that information tomorrow as well
